What’s It all About?

The Tree of Life workshop is a powerful story-telling, psychosocial support tool for healing and wellbeing. It draws from the Narrative Therapy modality in psychotherapy and uses the metaphor of a tree and its parts to represent different aspects of our lives.
Participants begin by drawing their own Tree of Life (no art skills required). Then they are facilitated in referring to the roots for acknowledgment of their ancestry; the trunk to identify and celebrate their strengths and identity; the branches to explore and craft their hopes and dreams; and the leaves and fruit to represent special people, gifts and accomplishments.

It is best done in a group so that participants can then experience the joining of their tree to other trees and the making of a Forest of Life. The use of metaphors and carefully formulated questions invites participants to craft the stories of their lives into hope, resilience and legacy. A well facilitated group creates a safe space for acknowledgement and conversations about hardship, afflictions, bereavement and loss. This process supports mental, emotional and spiritual healing and wellbeing. By the end of the workshop, participants usually report a greater sense of identity, confidence, belonging, hope, inspiration and empowerment.

Fully Booked. Registrations are closed for 2024.

History

The Tree of Life methodology was developed over twenty years ago through a partnership between Ncazelo Ncube (who was working with children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa) and David Denborough (Dulwich Centre). The approach became so successful in opening up safe spaces for children to share their stories of hardship and trauma, that it was then extended to people of all ages (8-80+ years) and taken to a variety of countries across the globe, including Australia.
